Bobby Sheehan’s Bowery Boy: Photographs 1975-1995 offer a streetwise retrospective of Sheehan’s New York City from the seventies to the nineties. From kinetic freeze frames of punk legends at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City to a sleek campaign for Soho fashion boutique Parachute that caught the eye of Andy Warhol, Sheehan’s images exemplify the times without ever resorting to what David Bowie termed “heavy nostalgia.” Also featured are a carefully curated assortment of Sheehan’s fellow New York misfits: portraits of artists, alcoholics and actors along with anonymous nighthawks captured by Sheehan’s hidden 4x5 Graflex Speed Graphic camera during the wee small hours of the morning. What emerges is a visual history of one misfit’s attempt to understand what makes people tick, what makes them unique, and what connects us to each other.
